The myth of Suicidal Pedestrians is a very popular legend in the GTA community. This myth is also frequently referred to as the myth of the Falling Lemmings, which got its name from the 1991 puzzle video game Lemmings, a video game released by DMA Design, which would later be renamed to Rockstar North, the developers of the Grand Theft Auto series.

Grand Theft Auto III

Aspatria - Bedford Point Expressway

In the Aspatria - Bedford Point Expressway tunnel on Staunton Island, pedestrians may sometimes be seen running off of the edge of the overhang above the tunnel. This is due to a pedestrian path glitch, and it is also because there is no fence or railing to prevent the pedestrians from going off the edge. Also, the pedestrian's AI is not smart enough to avoid the edge and fall off. This usually occurs if the player fires weapons while inside the tunnel, and the pedestrians may flee in panic and accidentally run off the edge, where they will fall to their deaths in the tunnel.

Wichita Gardens

In the Wichita Gardens, just down the road by the safe house, pedestrians may sometimes be seen running from the right-side footpath, then going into the water and drown. This is due to a pedestrian path glitch. Also, the pedestrian's AI is not smart enough to avoid the water area and fall off.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Links Bridge

See main article: Suicidal Worker

In the mission Phnom Penh '86, when the player passes under the Links Bridge in the Maverick, a PIG security guard will jump off of it and will land in the water below. This can be easily seen if the player pans the camera backwards right when the helicopter passes under the bridge. It is unknown if this is an easter egg or a simple pedestrian path glitch.

WK Chariot Hotel

A pamphlet of the Samartians, reading DON'T JUST JUMP HYPER-JUMP, can be seen by the window on the accessible floor of WK Chariot Hotel, Vice Point. The Samartians are a real life organization for emotional support regarding suicides. Rockstar parodied the Samartians and encouraged the player to commit suicide. Several suicidal screams have also been heard in the hotel.

Escobar International

At the southwest part of the Escobar International, there is a small corner of the footpath that slightly turns to connect the footpath on the other side of the small bridge. Due to Pedestrians AI they usually walk off the edge of the footpath and sometimes fall to their deaths on the street below. This is because pedestrians can only walk in a straight line and they cannot turn circularly in any direction.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Flint County

See main article: Suicidal Photographers

The most famous suicidal pedestrian myth is that of the Suicidal Photographer. This pedestrian spawns on the shore next to the inlet in Flint County, between the countryside and Los Santos. This pedestrian can be seen kneeling down and taking photos of the Los Santos skyline across the inlet, where he will suddenly stand up, and begin to walk off onto a small precipice fall into into the water, where he will drown. It is unknown if this is an easter egg or a glitch.

Emerald Isle Casino

At the southwest part of the Emerald Isle Casino in Las Venturas, there is a small corner of the building that slightly sticks out into the sidewalk. Pedestrians may sometimes spawn on the roof of this building due to a spawn glitch, and they will walk off the edge of the building and fall to their deaths on the street below. This is because the corner of the building disrupts the pedestrian's path on the sidewalk below, and sometimes pedestrians may spawn on the roof by accident.

Caligula's Palace/Casino

There are many strange pedestrian spawn glitches that may occur inside the Caligula's Palace.

If the player has a wanted level of 2 stars or more, and the player goes to the roof of the casino, policemen will appear on the roof in large quantities and will be shooting at the player. Attempting to get close to the policemen will result in them backing away from the player, and this could lead to them backing off of the edge of the roof and falling to their deaths.

Random pedestrians may sometimes spawn on the roof of the casino and will be walking around. Their paths are completely random, and some of the peds may walk off the edge of the building and falling to their deaths.

If the player enters the casino and kills as many pedestrians as possible, and then goes up to the roof of the casino, the same pedestrians that he killed inside the building will fall from the sky and land on the roof of the casino. This glitch is related to the interior of the casino, which is located far above the casino in the Hidden Interiors Universe. If the player kills the pedestrians in the interior and then exits the building, the dead pedestrians will fall from the interior in the sky and land on the roof of the building.

San Fierro Driving School

A falling Pedestrian in San Fierro.

This glitch is very similar to the one mentioned earlier. The glitch will only work if the player is not dating Michelle Cannes. Go to the San Fierro Driving School in Doherty and enter it. Inside, Michelle Cannes can be found talking to another pedestrian. If the player then exits the interior and climbs to the roof of the driving school, the same pedestrian that was talking to Michelle Cannes will fall from the sky and land on the roof of the building. This glitch is also related to the driving school's interior which is located high above the driving school in the Hidden Interiors Universe.

Los Santos Cluckin' Bell

In the Cluckin' Bell restaurant located in Los Santos, just north of Grove Street, pedestrians may accidentally spawn at the top of a power line pole in front of the restaurant. The pedestrians will then walk off of it and land on the ground below, but the fall is rarely high enough to cause a significant decrease in the pedestrian's health.

San Andreas

While this occurrence is technically not the result of a spawn glitch or an easter egg, it nevertheless deserves to be listed on this page. In some 3D Universe games (GTA: San Andreas in particular), pedestrians have the tendency to jump into the path of the player's vehicle, effectively making the player run over them with his car and killing them. While initially this was thought to be an easter egg referencing pedestrians attempting to commit suicide, this is actually a glitch. Pedestrians are programmed to jump away from the player's path if he is driving towards them, but if the player changes his direction or turns slightly at the last second, the pedestrian may end up jumping in the wrong direction. While this is quite common in GTA: San Andreas, it has been rectified in later GTA games, and the glitch is almost nonexistent in the HD era games.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

Vice Point Mall

VCP Suicide

If the player goes inside the Vice Point Mall and begins opening fire, causing pedestrians to panic, and quickly heads back outside, he can see one or two pedestrians jumping off from the roof of the Mall, but the fall will not kill them. This can most likely be considered a spawn glitch, being pedestrians scared of Vic's gunfire who spawned on top of the roof, and in their panic mode ran off.

Ducum Inn

Ducum Inn suicides

While suicidal pedestrians cannot naturally be seen killing themselves, there is a morbid easter egg at the Ducum Inn that can prove otherwise. Behind the building is a large swimming pool that would be used by patrons, as well as three large diving boards, the tallest of which goes up many yards. The suicidal easter egg comes in when one takes into consideration that the deepest point of the pool is about as high as Vic's shins, and cannot be more than one foot deep. A jump from the tallest diving board would realistically result in a broken bone, and if the diver hits their head, death.

Van Khoff at the Beach

Van Khoff suicide

Suicidal pedestrians are also rumored to appear at the beach located behind the Van Khoff hotel. Unlike the other types of suicidal pedestrians in VCS, it appears that the Van Khoff pedestrians just drop dead in the sand for no reason. However, this is most likely a simple glitch as well. The area where the suicidal pedestrians occur is also notorious for spawn bugs such as pedestrians spawning halfway in the sand, and pedestrians having strange characteristics. This behavior of dead pedestrians can probably be explained as the pedestrian walking onto two different parts of the level's geometry, same with the spawn bugs, which in the game's physics engine acts like a crusher and kills them nearly instantly due to their low health.

Downtown

Downtown suicide

The most notorious and well known case of documented suicides in VCS comes from an unnamed building in Downtown Vice City, near the Skumole Shack. On the back entrance of the exterior has a staircase with a buggy texture, that while strange looking, actually fully supports pedestrians as they spawn walking on and around the staircase. However, on the roof things get more strange. When the player walks up the staircase himself, a pedestrian will spawn very close to Vic and immediately die. As with the Van Khoff suicides, this is most likely a glitch in the level's geometry that crushes a mis-spawned pedestrian to death.
