Red Dead is a Western action-adventure video game series created and published by Rockstar Games, developers of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Many fans of both Red Dead and the Grand Theft Auto series have tried to develop theories linking the timeline of GTA's HD Universe (beginning with 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV) and the rebooted Red Dead series developed by Rockstar from 2010, starting with Red Dead Redemption.

References to Red Dead in Grand Theft Auto games[]

Grand Theft Auto V contains a few Easter eggs referencing John Marston, the protagonist and playable character of Redemption. Inside Franklin's Vinewood safehouse, there is a book with an author listed as J. Marston. A character bearing a likeness to Marston can also be found on t-shirts worn by pedestrians. During the mission The Last One, an optional mission only available when the player has attained 100% completion, Franklin hunts down a man in a Bigfoot costume who recites the speech of the Sasquatch from Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare when caught. The Bigfoot hunter in that mission also uses a model from RDR. There is also an unknown grave on a mountain in the San Chianski Mountain Range which resembles a similar model used in Redemption. The grave was later used for the "Treasure Hunt" special event in GTA Online, which was a promotion for the release of Red Dead Redemption II. Two streets in Sandy Shores, Armadillo and Cholla Springs, are named after locations from RDR.

In Undead Nightmare, there is an achievement called Six Years In The Making that is unlocked by killing Sasquatches in the game's countryside. This is an overt reference to the Bigfoot myth from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, released exactly six years before Undead Nightmare.

A character from Red Dead Redemption II, Francis Sinclair, has an appearance based off of the Epsilon Program from GTA San Andreas. He is wearing a light blue suit and has a blotchy birthmark on his eye similar to that of the descendant of Kraff.
