Police Corruption needs to be cleaned up to meet the standards of the GTA Myths Wiki. Reason: Expand San Andreas Crash section |
Police Corruption refers to the misuse of power, misappropriation of police resources and excessive brutality, either for personal gain or satisfaction. In GTA, police corruption can be observed in almost every game, but is particularly evident in San Andreas and GTA V.
San Andreas
Police corruption plays a central role in the story of San Andreas in the form of the C.R.A.S.H. police gang unit. Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Pulaski regularly participate in taking bribes and influencing the gangs of Los Santos to operate in ways that benefit them.
Several police officers can be observed beating a random pedestrians in the underground police parking and impound lot under the Los Santos Police Department.There appears to be a police officer repeatedly punching and beating the noc whilst another officer is standing nearby, brandishing a pistol in case anything gets out of hand. The pedestrian will have their hands raised as if they are surrendering, yet this does not affect the police's actions. This is most likely a reference to the real life police brutality that occurred in California during the 1990s.
What is strange is that, even if both policemen are killed, the pedestrian will not move from their spot, and will just stand there with their hands up until they are eventually killed. However, injuring the pedestrian with a weapon will make them put their hands down and either fight back or run in place. It is still unknown why the pedestrian does not make any attempt to run away or defend themselves, but most likely the pedestrian was simply not programmed to do so.
An unrelated case of possible police brutality can be witnessed when the player has a three star wanted level or higher. The gunner inside the perusing Police Maverick will shout "I'm going to kill this guy!" but another officer, presumably the driver, tells the gunner to make sure he kills "the right one." This may imply that the Police Mavericks indiscriminately fire and harm civilians, although this could be considered incompetency rather than brutality.
Grand Theft Auto V
An LSPD officer utilizing the services of a prostitute.
The LSPD have been incriminated in the use of prostitute services while on the job. This can be directly observed on their Bleeter page, where they claim to hire prostitutes for oral sex. Image evidence can be seen in an image on their Bleeter page. However, no police in-game can be observed to approach prostitutes.
