Misty Hollows, also known as the Ghost Lake, is a false myth in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The rumor purports the existence of an unknown lake or hidden grove on the slopes of Mount Chiliad that appears entirely enveloped by fog.
Description[]
One of the earliest myths in GTA San Andreas, the lesser known Misty Hollows rumor emerged and propagated in the initial years after the game's release.[1][2] According to the witnesses, a specific area of Mount Chiliad will become submerged in a dense fog that rises only a few feet off of the ground, making it distinct from the regular foggy weather which typically occurs on the mountain. The area where the effect was reported is on one of the Chiliad Challenge bicycle trails, in a forested area just after the player takes the large wooden ramp. Jumping the ramp is said to be the trigger for the fog effect.
In reality, the fog is an unintended consequence of the game's regular skybox system. Large parts of Mount Chiliad are above cloud line and the game will deliberately not render clouds when the player is on the mountain to avoid areas being overtaken by clouds. Performing the jump on the ramp may trick the game into thinking the player is airborne enough for the regular cloud mechanic to kick in again, although only for a few moments and not always consistently. The effect can also be seen when flying around the mountain or parachuting off its peak.
