GTA Myths Wiki

The Killer Cowboy is a possible myth found in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Description[]

This myth involves a particular pedestrian found in the game. This ped is a white male, who wears a cowboy hat, a checkered red and dark blue plaid shirt, and blue jeans. His skin ID is 161. This pedestrian normally spawns in the countryside areas of Flint County and Red County. Several players have captured photos and videos of this pedestrian attacking the player with random weapons. Documented sightings of the cowboy show him equipped with a range of items, from charging at the player unnarmed to shooting with an AK-47. The most common claim is that he wields a Desert Eagle.

The Killer Cowboy has been sighted most frequently at the two bridges that connect Shady Creeks to Back O' Beyond. Other video evidence has shown the cowboy active around the Ghost Lake in Back O' Beyond. The pedestrian is known to attack the player unprovoked and with no warning at all. This myth is very strange because it would be unusual to find pedestrians in very isolated areas like Back o' Beyond. Player reports say that the chance to encounter him increases in stormy-foggy weather late at night.

When the first sighting of the Killer Cowboy was uploaded, it was initially believed to be just a misspawned pedestrian, but soon rumors began to arise about the ped attacking players unprovoked. The myth developed further notoriety and several other players produced videos showcasing the cowboy attacking them in various rural areas. Many of these videos were simple misidentifications of common street criminals or enraged pedestrians, though some were more inexplicable.

Despite the quantity of recorded encounters with the Killer Cowboy, his existence is not definitely proven. There is no game code known regarding this specific pedestrian and his spawn has not yet been able to be consistently replicated. As a generic pedestrian, the cowboy does not have any higher temperament or aggression relative to other countryside pedestrians. There are several ways that an aggressive pedestrian could be encountered in wilderness areas:

  • Use of the BGLUAWML cheat code, which causes pedestrians to spawn armed and hostile towards CJ. Some myth hunters claim that this code increases the odds of encountering the Killer Cowboy, but this has not been proven.
  • Use of the STATEOFEMERGENCY cheat code. This cheat cannot be disabled and persists through the entire game session, even continuing if a past save game is loaded.
  • Starting the Vigilante side-mission in police vehicles. The dirt paths around the Sasquatch Creek bridges and Ghost Lake have valid vehicle pathways and criminals will spawn here if the mission is triggered in Flint County areas. The criminal's models do not disappear right away and will either continue their attempt to flee or engage with the player depending on their aggression.
  • Spawns of street criminals or enraged pedestrians in rare circumstances. It is possible for the player to lead normal aggressive pedestrians into the wilderness unintentionally. As long as they stay within the draw distance, they will pursue CJ. An unaware player can be followed by a pedestrian that has been provoked normally and misinterpret it as something which spawned in the wilderness.

Players familiar with the Killer Cowboy myth may be more willing to capture proof of encountering his specific model compared to other countryside peds, believing it to be a genuine myth sighting.

Another belief is that the Killer Cowboy could potentially be the creature Rockstar mentioned was somewhere in the woods, also known as the Shady Creeks Creature. However, the "but there is something in the woods" line was a hoax.
