GTA Myths Wiki

The Great Ocean Highway Creature is a cryptid that reportedly exists within the game world of Grand Theft Auto V, and can be found stalking players and NPCs along the Great Ocean Highway. There have been no photographed sightings of the creature, however it has been described as "lanky" and grey in color. The creature has been blamed for phenomena such as NPC car crashes, and even connected to other myths like Deadly Drivers.

Description[]

The Great Ocean Highway Creature is one of several unlikely cryptids rumored to exist within the Grand Theft Auto V open world. Alleged sightings place the creature along the rural stretches of the Great Ocean Highway, primarily west of Paleto Bay, as well as west near Procopio beach, as well as the winding coastal roads where traffic AI frequently behaves unpredictably. Witness accounts describe the creature as a tall, lanky, grey humanoid figure standing motionless on the roadside or partially obscured by fog.

Reports claim that the creature appears most often during nighttime hours, usually between 12:00 AM and 3:00 AM, and is commonly associated with foggy or stormy weather. Unlike most wilderness-based myths, this creature is said to remain close to paved roads rather than remote terrain. NPC drivers in the area are allegedly affected by its presence, panicking suddenly, swerving off the road, or colliding with other vehicles without an apparent cause. Some players report pedestrians fleeing into traffic or entering a permanent panic state when the creature is nearby. This behavior is similar to that exhibited by deadly drivers, however, the NPCs are in a panic state and not trying to intentionally harm the player.

The Great Ocean Highway’s coastal cliffs, sparse vegetation, and long sightlines may contribute to the illusion of a humanoid figure, especially during fog or heavy rain. Traffic congestion, sudden braking, and pileups are common on this highway due to AI pathing issues and wildlife crossing the road, which may explain the reported crashes. Additionally, distant NPC models and LOD transitions can cause characters to appear unnaturally stretched or greyed out at long distances.

Due to a lack of consistent spawn conditions, no confirmed models, and no reliable visual or audio evidence, the Great Ocean Highway Creature is considered extremely unlikely. NPC panic behavior and vehicle collisions are well-documented AI quirks in the area, particularly during adverse weather. As a result, most reports are attributed to traffic AI failures, environmental effects, or player misinterpretation rather than an undiscovered entity.

Possible explanations[]

Several explanations have been proposed by members of the myth-hunting community, which include more simple ones such as players mistaking the tall and skinny trees often found on the roadsides of the highway, as well as stone formations.
